Functions
Packet Tracer is a simulator that allows you to design networks. It mimics the action of hardware found in Cisco Internet Operating Systems. You can create your own model network topology by clicking and dragging routers, switches and other types of network devices. It only features fundamental Cisco IOS tools as it was developed as a supplementary tool for CCNA Academy students.
It provides an authoring system and a network protocol simulation to help users understand abstract networking concepts. This is made possible by rendering the network elements into an animation. Its command center only offers the necessary Cisco routers and switches. So, you will not be able to create a production network nor will you be able to learn all the IOS. You can begin designing your network topology by clicking and dragging the various Cisco network devices onto the work area.
Once a physical connection has been made, a cable item will appear. You can also simulate basic routing protocols such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). The software can be used as a collaboration tool as well. By using a single computer network, you and other Packet Tracer users can connect multiple topologies together. The multi-user system enables students to create a cohesive network, as well as instructors to create network experimentation activities in the classroom.
Essential tool for Network Topology
Cisco Packet Tracer is a straightforward network simulation platform for Cisco Networking Academy students and advanced users. Here, you can learn practical networking technology skills as well as experiment with network behavior. The program is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions and is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10.
